We’ve Been Around the Block
At Hoops World Elite, we’ve played in AAU basketball for a long time. We’ve seen the wins, the losses, the great moments, and the messy ones. If it’s happened in AAU, we’ve probably been there.
We also know AAU can be confusing. It's full of teams, tournaments, and people who all seem to be doing their own thing. That’s why we want to help kids and parents understand what AAU is and how to make smart choices.
We believe youth basketball should be organized, fun, respectful, and about more than just winning.
So let’s break it all down. We’ve split this guide into three parts:
Beginner: You’re new and want to know what AAU even means.
Intermediate: You’ve played or watched a bit and want to pick the right team.
Advanced: You’ve been around for years and are thinking about college basketball.
Feel free to skip ahead to your level.
BEGINNER: What is AAU Basketball?
#1. What is AAU Basketball?AAU stands for Amateur Athletic Union. It’s one of the biggest youth sports groups in the country. When people say “AAU basketball,” they usually mean travel or club basketball—not always the official AAU brand, but competitive teams that play in tournaments.
Think of it like this: “Kleenex” is a brand, but people use it to mean all tissues. Same thing with AAU.
#2. What Does AAU Stand For?It stands for Amateur Athletic Union. It promotes sports and fitness for kids. It’s a big, national group, but again, not every “AAU team” is official.
#3. How Do You Start an AAU Team? It’s pretty easy! You just need:
8–10 players
A coach
A team name
Some uniforms
A tournament to play in
That’s it! But easy doesn’t always mean good. Some teams are started by people with little or no experience. So before joining one, make sure it’s run well.
#4. How Do You Join a Team?
You can look online or ask around. Many teams aren’t on the official AAU site, so a Google search for “AAU basketball team near me” is a good start. Try emailing or calling the coach or club. Just know—it may take a while for them to reply.
#5. When Does AAU Happen?
Spring and summer (March–June) is the main season. Fall and winter are optional for younger players. High school players usually skip winter AAU because of school basketball.
#6. Is AAU Worth It?
It depends. AAU is great if you want to compete and get better. But ask these questions first:
Who’s the coach? Are they experienced?
What does it cost?
Do the team’s values match ours?
How organized are they?
What’s the skill level?
What’s the practice and game schedule?
#7. Can Seniors Play AAU?
Sometimes. Most players stop after the summer before senior year. But there are “unsigned senior” teams that play in the spring.
#8. Do AAU Teams Travel?
Some do. Some don’t. Travel can be fun, but it’s not always needed—especially for younger kids. For high schoolers, travel is more common because of college recruiting.
#9. How Much Does AAU Cost?
Anywhere from free to thousands of dollars. It depends on the team, gear, travel, and what else they offer.
INTERMEDIATE: Picking the Right AAU Team
Here are 6 things to look for when choosing a team:
#1. Values
What does the team believe in? At Hoops World Elite, we teach more than just basketball. Our values spell STRIVE:
Sacrifice
Trust
Relentless
Integrity
Vision
Excellence
If a team only cares about winning or giving every kid a trophy, WE might not be a good match for your family.
#2. Coaches
Good coaches matter. Ask:
Do they have experience?
Did they pass a background check?
Do they care about kids, not just winning?
At WE, we train and screen all our coaches. Can the team you’re looking at say the same?
#3. Organization
Is the club organized? Do they answer emails or calls? If they don’t respond before you join, they probably won’t after either.
#4. Practices & Games
Do they even practice? Some don’t!At WE, we practice twice a week. Ask about:
How often they practice
Where the tournaments are
What kind of players are on the team
Whether your child will be challenged
#5. Other Perks
Do they offer athletic training or clinics? WE team members get access to extra training, online shooting programs, recruiting help, and discounts.
#6. Cost
Don’t just ask what it costs. Ask if it’s worth it. You’re not just paying for games—you’re investing in your child’s growth.
#7. Bonus for High Schoolers: College Help
Has the team helped players get recruited before? Do they know what they’re doing?
At WE, we’ve helped hundreds of players get into college basketball over decades. We offer real guidance, not empty promises.
ADVANCED: Playing in College Starts Here
Want to play college ball? Then you, your family, and your coaches need a plan.
#1. Style of Play
College coaches want to see defense, team play, and smart decisions. Not just fast breaks and 1-on-1 moves. If your team doesn’t play like a real team, coaches can’t see your full potential.
#2. Coach Experience
Has your coach helped players get recruited? Do they have real knowledge and college connections?
#3. Showcase Schedule
Does your team play in tournaments where college coaches are watching? These are called “NCAA Live Period” events. They matter.
#4. Be Proactive
Don’t wait for college to find you. At WE, we help players build profiles, send emails, and make highlight videos.
Final Thoughts
AAU basketball can be messy and confusing—but it can also be amazing. If your child loves the game and wants to improve, club basketball is the best place to grow. It teaches teamwork, toughness, and life lessons you can use anywhere.
At Hoops World Elite, we don’t just teach skills for basketball. We teach skills for life.We teach skills for success.
