Learning to Land Like an Athlete
Watch a basketball game closely and you’ll notice something important. Players jump dozens of times. But what matters just as much as jumping is how they land. Landing safely, stopping quickly, and absorbing force are critical skills that protect athletes from injury and prepare them for explosive movement. That’s the goal of Phase Two of the HOPS program: eccentric training.
What Is Eccentric Training?
An eccentric contraction happens when a muscle lengthens while controlling force.
Examples include:
• Landing from a jump
• Lowering into a squat
• Decelerating during a sprint
The muscles act like shock absorbers, protecting the joints.
Training this phase develops:
• deceleration ability
• knee and ankle stability
• tendon strength
• injury prevention
For high school athletes, eccentric training is one of the best tools for reducing ACL injury risk.
Why It Matters in Basketball
Basketball is full of sudden stops and landings:
• Jumping for rebounds
• Landing after layups
• Cutting on defense
• Stopping on jump shots
Players who cannot control these forces put enormous stress on their knees and ankles.
Eccentric training teaches athletes to absorb force safely and efficiently.
Sample Exercises from the HOPS Program
Snap Downs
Athletes rise onto their toes and quickly drop into an athletic stance.
Benefits:
teaches proper landing mechanics
builds body awareness
reinforces athletic posture
Controlled Squat Jumps
Jump up and land softly, pausing before the next rep.
Benefits:
landing mechanics
deceleration control
knee stability
Step-Down Control
Athletes step off a small platform and control the landing.
Benefits:
eccentric leg strength
balance
joint stability
Deceleration Lunges
Athletes step forward and absorb the landing slowly.
Benefits:
hip control
single-leg stability
injury prevention
STRIVE Values in Action
Eccentric training builds both physical and mental toughness.
Relentless
Athletes must repeat high-quality movements over and over.
Trust
Players learn to trust their bodies and the training process.
Vision
Each landing drill builds toward explosive movement later.
The Bridge to Explosive Power
Once athletes learn to control positions and absorb force, they are ready for the final stage.
The next phase unlocks the explosive athleticism every basketball player wants.
